What is St Saviour’s Edible Garden?
Well, it is an experiment in urban food growing on previously ‘green concrete’ outside the church on Brockley Rise. With the agreement of the vicar, Alyson Peberdy and the Church Council, it has been possible to use a piece of this land to grow herbs, flowers and vegetables in a public place.
It is also a Permculture project with an ‘egoless’ aspect, inspired by M Fukuoka, which means it’ s not really about us getting something ‘out of the garden’ , more of a ‘let’s see what happens,’ in terms of visual improvement of the area and community involvement in growing and picking.
The installation of the beds in 2009 was made possible by lots of local volunteers from Transistion Town Brockley, Lewisham LETS, permaculture enthusiasts, Brownies, Scouts and parents of children at Dalmain school mainly. Also funding was obtained initially from Capital Growth (we are growing space 35) and then the localities fund Lewisham.

4. Kids – children are very welcome but are the responsiblity of their carers at all times
5. Equal opportunities – St Saviour’s welcomes and respects people of all ages, faiths, backgrounds and abilities. We encourage you to be as friendly as possible to other gardeners and passers by.
6. Church – you are welcome to go inside, use the vestry and toilets, make tea etc. Please respect the church users and be quiet if you go in the main church however.
A look at some beds..
Growing perennnials rather than annuals for low-maintenance productive beds.
However some annuals, like these Calendula above self-seed and reliably grow everywhere....
Mixed planting has many benefits: hiding the fruits from predators, detering pests, keeping soil healthier by using diversity and a succession of yields
Please wear comfortable shoes and advise us of any relevant health problems that may affect your gardening enjoyment!
All welcome, children under 13 to be supervised by carers. Refreshments and snacks provided.
Please let me know if you mind photos being taken for the blog and for my Permaculture Diploma portfolio!
